Together with Hugh de Cressingham's appointment as Chamberlain of Scotland, Edward I made Sir William de Ormesby the Justiciar. Scotland was in revolt during his term of office, so there was little he could achieve in the establishment of law and order. His family estates were in Lincolnshire and today it is based in Ireland.

First found in Lincolnshire where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Richard Ormesby settled in Maine in 1630; George, Catherine, James, John, Joseph, Robert and William Ormsby all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860.

Sir Edward Ormsby moved to Shrulegrove after the departure of Pierce Lynch in 1655. Sir Edward was stated to be the head of that family. In 1658 a Richard Ormsby was sheriff of Galway, in 1671 the same was elected Major of Galway. A Robert Ormsby was chosen as representative for the parliament in 1695, about that period the Ormsbys seem to have left Galway and moved to Mayo. When Lord Clanricarde was reinstated, during the restoration, Sir Edward held Shrule by lease from the Earl.
It was him who built the elegant mansion in Shrulegrove, extending or demolishing and rebuilding Lynch?s House, many of the older generation still among us will remember the extensive ruins which existed there. Shrulegrove is part of the Barony of Clare and County of Galway and some of the Ormsbys resented being referred to as ?of Shrule?. Sir Edward died in 1683 and was succeeded by Gilbert Ormsby.

George Joseph ORMSBY, son of George E. and Bridget SMITH ORMSBY, was born in White Co. Ind 10 Dec 1890. He married May D. HALE. On 1 Aug 1918, he entered the army at Kokomo Ind. and was called to Indianapolis Ind. 15 Aug 1918, where he took medical instruction for two months. While at Fort Wayne, Detroit Mich., he was attached to the air service. His discharge was issued 28 Jan 1919.

Charles Francis ORMSBY, son of George E. and Bridget SMITH ORMSBY, was born in Elwood Ind., but when he entered the army 26 Apr 1918, he was living with his parents in Kokomo Ind. One month after he went to Camp Zachary Taylor Ky, he was ordered to Camp Sheridan Ala and ws transferred to Camp Upton L.I. 27 Jun 1918. There he entrained for Montreal, where on the following day, he began his voyage on the St. Lawence.
13 ships were in the convoy leaving Halifax N.S. and they were escorted by the battleship Devonshire. When the danger zone was reached, they were met by several destryoers or little "speed demons". After his arrival at Camp de Souge, France, his regiment practiced on the big guns on the range until 23 Sep 1915; then the left for the front lines and on 17 Oct 1918 he went into active service with Bat D. 136th F.A. His discharged was issued at Camp Zachary Taylor Ky, 8 Apr 1919.

About Ormsby, Mary Ellen
Mary Ellen Ormsby who was married to Edward Tolen were my great-grandparents. Edward and two of his sons spelled their last name Tolen. My grandfather, Charles, spelled it Tolan. I have quite a bit more info on the Tolan/Tolen descendants but not much at all on the Ormsby side so it would be great if we are related. My Mary Ellen Ormsby was born about 1850 in Indiana and died about 1879 in Indiana and is buried in St. Patrick?s Cemetery, Oxford, IN.
Her husband, Edward Tolen, was born on August 10, 1838 in County Cork, Ireland and died on March 18, 1929 when he was visiting my grandfather, Charles, in Minnesota. He is buried in St. Clara?s Cemetery, Clara City, MN. I know my Mary Ellen had two brothers, George and William. Are you descended from one of them? I haven?t had much time yet to study your website.

I have Thomas and Winnie as being the parents of Mary Ellen Ormsby (born about 1850) who was my great-grandmother. She had at least two brothers - George (born in 1853) and William (born 1858). Mary Ellen Ormsby was married to Edward Tolen on November 5, 1872 in Benton County, Indiana. They had 3 children: Thomas Edward Tolen (born December 3, 1873 in Round Grove Township, White County, Indiana), William Tolen (born in 1876) and Charles Tolan (born September 8, 1878 in Round Grove Township, White County, Indiana. Apparently my Mary Ellen Ormsby Tolen died in 1879 as she was not listed in the 1880 census. Charles was listed as living with his uncle, George Ormsby.

About Thomas Edward Tolen:
A recent addition to the sterling citizenship of Big Creek Township is Thomas Tolen, who spent part of his early life in White County and this district of Indiana, but who laid the foundation for his substantial prosperity as an Iowa farmer, and only about two years ago returned to White County and invested extensively in lands and is now one of the aggressive factors in carrying on the business of development and improvement in his section of the county.
Thomas Tolen was born in Benton County, Indiana, December 10, 1873, a son of Edward and Mary Ellen (Ormsby) Tolen. His father was a native of Ireland and his mother was of Irish parentage. There were three sons in the family: William, who is a merchant in Iowa, and married Geneva Hanna, whose people came from Wisconsin; Charles, an Iowa farmer, who married Catherine O?Connor of Iowa.

Mr. Tolen's father came to this section of Indiana in 1867, and after working at monthly wages finally bought a little land and entered upon his career as an independent agriculturist. On account of sickness he lost his first purchase, and then worked as a renter for ten years. He finally moved out to Iowa, and is still living in that state, prosperous and highly respected.

Thomas Tolen received his education while living on a farm and assisting his father. He continued at home until the age of twenty-three, and then married Miss Caroline R. Mills, daughter of Herman and Elizabeth (Demerly) Mills, who were among the early settlers of White County. After his marriage Mr. Tolen located on a rented farm, remained there five years, and the results of his industry and the thrifty management on the part of himself and wife, enabled him to buy eighty acres in Webster County, Iowa. He improved that land, then bought 100 acres in the same section, and was soon recognized as one of the most substantial residents in the fine farming district around Fort Dodge. Mr. Tolen took an active part in local politics while a resident of Iowa, and his popularity is illustrated by the fact that while he is a democrat and lived in a republican district, he was elected township clerk by a majority of forty-seven, though normally the republican candidate would have had the office by at least sixty votes. To further show the esteem and respect paid Mr. Tolen whilst a resident of Iowa, the people of the Twenty-seventh Senatorial District, in 1912, urged him to become a candidate for state senator in this district, overwhelmingly republican, with a usual majority of 3,500, and he made the race and was defeated by only 800 votes. For two terms he also served on the school board and was twice president of the board, and his value in citizenship well matched his progressiveness and prosperity as a farmer.

In 1913 Mr. Tolen returned to White County, and bought his present farm, comprising a half section of land, in Big Creek Township. He has invested much money and has used the experience acquired in Iowa in developing this place, and is already well established as a general farmer and stock raiser. He is also instrumental in the building of a new gravel road in Big Creek Township. This road is now under construction and will be known as "The Tolen Road." He and his family are members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Reynolds, Indiana.
Mr. and Mrs. Tolen have the following children: William Edward, Elizabeth Louise, Catherine Violet, Herman Leo, Mary Ellen, Thomas Vincent, Anna Josephine, Paul Joseph, and Lillian Irene.

Looking for any information about where in Ireland these specific Dwyers originated and any possible relatives. Edmund and Sara settled in New Albany, Indiana and had children, Mary, Sara, Catherine, Anna, Dennis, John and Thomas(my great grandfather) after New Albany the family lived in Elwood Indiana and Kokomo, IN. Three of the girls became nuns. Most of family buried in Crown Point cemetery, Lake Co Indiana

My Uncle Charles F. Ormsby married Katherine B. Dwyer, the daughter from Thomas Dwyer's sencond wife Margaret after his first wife Ida died young.

Hi, I am interested in finding info the Ormsby clan, especially on my Great Granddad George Edward Ormsby who was born in Lafayette IN USA about 1851 & who married Bridget Smith/Ormsby. G. E. Ormsby?s parents were Thomas & Winifred (Winnie Hughes) Ormsby, who were possibly from Co. Mayo, West Meath or West Mead/Maid Ireland.
I am in the process of researching this data now & would be interested in hearing from other Ormsby?s, distant relatives, friends or anyone else who may have information to contribute &/or share on the Ormsby family history.
